Short answer
Your IQ Gateway (older systems call it an Envoy, or Envoy-S) is the box that collects readings from every microinverter and sends them to Enphase. When it loses its internet connection your app goes dark — but your panels keep producing the whole time, and your utility keeps crediting you, because that's measured at your meter and has nothing to do with monitoring.
Nine times out of ten this is your home network, not your solar equipment. Work through the steps below in order.
Your data isn't lost. The gateway stores production readings locally while it's offline and uploads the backlog once it reconnects. You'll see a Data Uploading notice in the Enphase app while that happens — it can take several hours, and longer after a long outage. Your history fills in gradually; you don't need to do anything.
Where to find the gateway
It's a white or grey box, roughly the size of a paperback, usually mounted near your electrical panel — basement, garage, utility room, or occasionally outside next to the meter. On some systems it sits inside an IQ Combiner, a larger grey enclosure with a hinged door. You only need to look at the front face. Don't open anything.
Step 1 — Read the lights
- Top LED (cloud icon) solid green — the gateway is online. If your app still shows a problem, it's mid-sync. Give it a few hours.
- Top LED off or red — the gateway has lost its internet connection. Continue to step 2.
- All LEDs off — no power. If your gateway plugs into an outlet, check it hasn't been unplugged — they often share an outlet with something else. If it's in an IQ Combiner, it runs off a breaker (usually the middle one in the box).
If every LED stays off, or flashes red for more than ten minutes after a restart, stop there and contact us — that points to a hardware fault rather than a network problem. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, stop and call us or an electrician.

Step 2 — Restart the gateway and your router
- Unplug the gateway's power cord (or switch its breaker off).
- Wait thirty seconds.
- Restore power.
- Wait two to three minutes and check whether the top LED turns solid green.
Restart your router too — off for thirty seconds, then on — and check that Wi-Fi is working on your other devices. That combination fixes most cases.
Step 3 — Reconnect to Wi-Fi (new router, new password, changed network)
If you changed your router, provider, network name or Wi-Fi password, the gateway is still looking for a network that no longer exists. The Enphase App is the easiest way to point it at the new one.
Before you start: be at home and near the gateway, have a working internet connection, have the latest Enphase App, and be logged in as the system owner.
- Open the app. You should see a Gateway Not Reporting alert on the home screen — tap Connect Gateway to the Internet.
- If you don't see that prompt, go to Menu → Settings → Connectivity and tap Configure Wi-Fi.
- Tap Connect, then Join when prompted. This connects your phone directly to the gateway.
- If the app can't reach the gateway on its own, put it in AP mode: briefly press and release the AP Mode button — don't hold it. The second LED lights solid green. Then tap Retry in the app.
- Tap Scan Wi-Fi Network, choose your home network, enter the password, and tap Join.
- The app confirms when it's connected.
Two things worth knowing about AP mode.
Once you turn it on it stays on for eight hours, so there's no rush. On current gateway software it also switches itself on automatically whenever there's no internet connection — so you may not need the button at all.
If you held the button instead of tapping it, you've started WPS pairing instead. Wait two minutes for that to time out, then press briefly.
The top LED may show red for a moment while it confirms the connection, then turn green. That's normal.

Step 4 — Or use an Ethernet cable
If you'd rather not use the app, or Wi-Fi won't take, a wired connection is the most stable option anyway:
- Run an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on your router to the Ethernet port on the gateway.
- Wait two to three minutes for it to detect the connection.
- Check that the top LED turns solid green.
You can switch back to Wi-Fi later through the app, or just leave it wired. If the gateway and router are too far apart for a cable, a pair of powerline adapters — which carry the network signal over your existing electrical wiring — is a common, inexpensive fix. Ask us if you want a recommendation.

If your system uses a cellular modem
Some systems report over an Enphase Mobile Connect cellular modem rather than your Wi-Fi — typically where home internet wasn't reliable at installation. Older units carry Multi-Tech branding. To reset one:
- Find the modem — either a standalone unit indoors, or mounted inside the combiner box next to the gateway.
- Unplug the USB cable from the modem. If it uses a Y-cable, disconnect both connectors.
- Power-cycle the gateway: unplug it (or switch its breaker off), wait thirty seconds, restore power.
- Make sure the modem's antenna is pointing vertically.
- Reconnect the USB cable. This powers the modem and makes it rejoin the cellular network.
- Wait two to three minutes and check for a solid green top LED.
Cellular systems can't be switched to Wi-Fi through the app. These modems also come with a fixed term of data service, so if reporting stopped with no other explanation the plan may simply have run out. Either way, get in touch — if you now have reliable home internet, moving to Wi-Fi or Ethernet is usually worth doing.
Still not connecting?
- Is your internet actually working? Test it on a device using your home Wi-Fi, not cellular data.
- Try the 2.4 GHz network. The gateway handles both bands, but 2.4 GHz reaches further — and gateways usually live in basements and garages. If your router publishes 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name, the gateway can end up on the weaker signal. Look for a network name containing 2G, 2.4G or 2.4 GHz, or ask your provider how to separate the bands.
- Is the gateway too far from the router? A mesh node or extender nearby usually settles repeated drop-outs for good — much cheaper than a service call.
- Did your router update its firmware recently? That can silently change network settings.
- Does your router support WPS? Press WPS on the router, then start WPS pairing on the gateway by holding the AP Mode button.
What to expect once it's back
The top LED goes solid green and the app clears the alert. A Data Uploading notice then appears while your history backfills — several hours, longer after a long outage. Panel-level detail returns with it. If data is still missing after that notice disappears, tell us.
None of this affects your utility credits. Those are measured by your meter, not by Enphase.
Please don't open the equipment. Solar systems carry live electricity even when the sun is down and even when your utility power is out. Never remove an inverter or combiner cover, never open a junction box, and never work on the array yourself. Everything in this article is safe to do from the ground with the power left alone — if a step calls for anything more, that's our job.
If none of that worked
Get in touch and tell us: the date the data stopped, what the LEDs are doing right now, whether anything changed at the house around that date, and your Site ID if you have it. That's usually enough for us to diagnose it before anyone gets in a truck.
Gateways do occasionally fail outright. If yours has, the replacement is covered by Enphase's product warranty and we handle the claim.
What's covered? Your contract with us sets out your workmanship and roof warranty — what's included and for how long. It's worth pulling up before you call. The equipment itself (panels, microinverters, optimizers, inverters, batteries) carries its own manufacturer warranty, and we handle those claims on your behalf. If you can't find your contract, ask us and we'll help you track it down.

Submit a service request online — and if you have your Site ID handy, include it. It lets us pull up your system before we call you back, which usually saves a round trip.
How soon will someone come out? When a visit is needed, we're typically scheduling about two weeks out. That's a typical case rather than a promise — how far you are from us, how full the schedule is that month, and whether a part has to come from Enphase or SolarEdge all move it. If something is urgent or unsafe, tell us when you get in touch and we'll treat it differently.
