Short answer
Your solar system connects to the internet the same way a laptop does — and like a laptop, it can't find a network that no longer exists. If you've changed your router, your provider, your network name, or your Wi-Fi password, your monitoring will go dark until the system is pointed at the new network.
Your panels keep producing the entire time. Nothing about this affects your power or your utility credits. It's only the data reporting that stops.
Do this before you change anything
If you're switching providers or replacing a router and you haven't done it yet, this saves you the whole problem: ask the installer to keep your existing network name and password. Most technicians will do it if you ask at the start. Your solar system — along with your thermostat, printer, doorbell, and everything else — then reconnects on its own and you never notice.
If it's already done, no harm. Follow the steps for your system below.
Which system do you have?
If you're not sure, look at your app: the Enphase app means microinverters and an IQ Gateway or Envoy. mySolarEdge means a SolarEdge inverter with power optimizers. If you have neither app installed, check the equipment near your electrical panel for the manufacturer name.
Enphase systems
You can do this yourself, standing near the gateway with your phone:
- Find the gateway — a white or grey box near your electrical panel, sometimes inside a larger grey combiner enclosure. Don't open anything.
- Press the AP Mode button briefly — a tap, not a hold. An indicator lights green, and AP mode then stays on for eight hours, so there's no rush. On current gateway software it also turns itself on automatically whenever there's no internet, so you may not need the button at all. (Holding the button starts WPS pairing instead — wait two minutes, then tap it.)
- On your phone, go to Wi-Fi settings and connect to the network named Envoy_ followed by six digits.
- Open a browser and go to http://172.30.1.1
- Pick your new network from the list and enter the password.
- Reconnect your phone to your normal Wi-Fi, then give it fifteen minutes and check the app.

SolarEdge systems
Open the mySolarEdge app while standing near your inverter and look for the Wi-Fi or communication setup option. On most recent inverters you can connect the app directly to the inverter and select your new network from there.
SolarEdge inverters vary a lot by model and age, and on some of them the network settings are only reachable from the inverter's own menus — which we'd rather walk you through than have you guess at. If the app doesn't offer a Wi-Fi setup option, or your new network doesn't appear, stop and call us. This is usually a five-minute phone call, not a service visit.
Please don't open the equipment. Everything above is done from a phone or a browser with the covers left on. Never remove an inverter or combiner cover, and don't operate the DC disconnect or safety switch on a SolarEdge inverter — those are ours to touch.
If your system is wired, not wireless
Some systems connect by an Ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi. If yours does, a new router usually just works — plug the cable into the new router in the same kind of port and give it fifteen minutes. If it doesn't come back, check that the cable is seated at both ends and that the port has a link light, then call us.
If your system uses a cell modem
A few systems — usually where home internet isn't reliable — report over a cellular modem we supplied rather than your Wi-Fi. Those don't care what you do to your router. If your data stopped around the same time as an internet change, it's probably a coincidence, and the more likely cause is the modem's data term running out. Get in touch and we'll check it.
What about the gap in my history?
Some of it fills itself in. Both platforms store readings locally on the equipment and upload the backlog once the connection is restored, so you'll usually recover at least part of the missing period. A long outage — weeks or months — will leave a permanent gap. It doesn't affect your billing or your credits, which are measured at your utility meter, not by monitoring.
If it keeps dropping out
Before anything else, try pointing the equipment at your 2.4 GHz network. It handles both bands, but 2.4 GHz reaches further — and gateways and inverters live in basements, garages and outside walls, exactly where coverage is worst. If your router publishes 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under a single name, the equipment can end up clinging to the weaker signal. Look for a network name containing 2G, 2.4G or 2.4 GHz, or ask your internet provider how to separate the bands.
A system that reconnects and then loses the connection again every few days usually has a weak signal rather than a fault. Gateways and inverters live in basements, garages, and outside walls — exactly where router coverage is worst. A mesh node or a Wi-Fi extender near the equipment normally settles it for good, and it's a far cheaper fix than a service call.

How soon will someone come out? When a visit is needed, we're typically scheduling about two weeks out. That's a typical case rather than a promise — how far you are from us, how full the schedule is that month, and whether a part has to come from Enphase or SolarEdge all move it. If something is urgent or unsafe, tell us when you get in touch and we'll treat it differently.
